| Note 1. Estonian being an inflected language, there are fourteen cases. Two cases are given for the months. The first is the nominative case. The second can be demnonstrated by an example: 24 veebruaril means on the 24th of February. |
| Note 2. Officially, there are no C, F, Q, W, X, Y, Z in the Estonian alphabet, although some of them do occasionally appear in adopted "foreign" words. In this totally phonetic language, C and Q are taken care of with K. X can be written as EKS, and Z can be written as TSEE. W and Y are redundant even in English. This leaves F as the "foregin" letter most often found in adopted words [telefoon, informatsioon, film,etc]. Estonians do have difficulty with the THETA sound, as in The, Their, etc, and the CH sound as in Chicago, Chimney, etc. There isn't much they can do with the former, but for Chicago a pronunciation guide probably gives Tshikago. Incidentally, the Estonian word for California is Kalifornia; China is Hiina, and Florida, well, that's still Florda. |
| Note 3. On the other hand, there are nine vowels, four of which -- äÄ, öÖ, üÜ and õÕ -- do not appear in English. The first three are pronounced quite similarly to those in German words. The last one is impossible. I have yet to encounter a native English speaking person who can master it in 100 tries. |
| Note 4. In general, there are no Estonian words which begin with B, D or G. If you see one, it is undoubtedly an adopted word, eg, biljon, baar (bar or tavern), etc. |
If you can help, I can only say that your job will not be lengthy or take too much of your time. All we really need are many of the words which commonly appear on notes, a number system, and months. You need not delve into additional commentary, as I did, above. You should really work with a dictionary, just for double checking your accuracy.
